Double Trouble Author Interview: Rigel Ailur

Double Trouble: An Anthology of Two-Fisted Team-Ups, edited by Jonathan Maberry & Keith R.A. DeCandido, presented by the International Association of Media Tie-in Writers, is now funding on Kickstarter. The anthology features more than a dozen great tie-in writers teaming classic characters up.

Here’s an interview with Rigel Ailur, who is pairing Marian of Sherwood, the paramour to Robin Hood in that legendary set of stories, with the historical figure of Annie Oakley, the sharpshooter who came to fame as part of Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show.

Author of Star Trek and Shadowrun short stories, Rigel Ailur also contributes to the Outside In series which reviews classic genre TV shows. She’s written twenty-four novels—including in the Tales of Mimion series, and The Vagabonds’ Adventures—and more than ninety short stories which appeared in such anthologies as The Angel Cat Collection, Brave New Girls, The Fans are Buried Tales, and Bad Ass Moms.

What led you to choose the characters you’re using for your Double Trouble story?

I wanted great characters who were easily recognizable. Paradoxically, I also wanted characters who were wide open and gave me lots of latitude on what to write about them.  The different time periods plus their very different backgrounds meant tons of potential for lots of really fun interaction. Plus, I just really love both characters. They’re smart, heroic, and independent.

What do you enjoy most about writing tie-in fiction?

I really enjoy contributing to franchises that I’m a huge fan of, and hopefully bringing something new and different to them. It’s great to be part of a bigger whole and to bring my individual perspective to it.

What’s your favorite licensed universe that you’ve written in during your career as a tie-in writer?

Definitely Star Trek, although it was also a blast to write the Wonder Woman pastiche I wrote for The Fans are Buried Tales.

What do you have that’s now out or coming out soon?

Check out the anthologies The Angel Cat Collection and Across the Ages (Tales of Mimion).
