Double Trouble: An Anthology of Two-Fisted Team-Ups, edited by Jonathan Maberry & Keith R.A. DeCandido, presented by the International Association of Media Tie-in Writers, is now funding on Kickstarter. The anthology features more than a dozen great tie-in writers teaming classic characters up.

Here’s an interview with Derek Tyler Attico, who is putting together three icons: Dracula, Dr. Henry Jekyll (and his alter-ego, Mr. Edward Hyde), and John Henry.
Derek Tyler Attico is a science fiction author, essayist, and photographer. He is a winner of the Excellence in Playwriting Award from the Dramatist Guild of America and a two-time winner of the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds short story contest.
What led you to choose the characters you’re using for your Double Trouble story?
I always enjoy writing stories that go against expectations. When I learned the theme for this anthology, I immediately knew I wanted to put two iconic antagonists together. Dracula and Dr. Jekyll / Mr. Hyde was a trio that really excited me. I then decided to make this unholy trinity a quartet. Adding John Henry fits beautifully for the story I want to tell.
What do you enjoy most about writing tie-in fiction?
Being able to contribute to a licensed universe from film, television, or classic literature is always a joy and a privilege. I recently created an alien species for the Star Trek Adventures RPG, and it’s an experience I’ll never forget and always treasure.
What’s your favorite licensed universe that you’ve written in during your career as a tie-in writer?
Star Trek. As a kid, the show always entertained me and challenged my imagination while presenting a moral dilemma to consider. Now, as I write within different aspects of the Star Trek universe, I endeavor to do the same and hopefully inspire someone the same way I was.
What do you have that’s now out or coming out soon?
I have a dieselpunk story that features the Harlem Hell fighters of World War I, coming from eSpec Books. I’m also currently developing the Xenovita RPG with Kelli Fitzpatrick and Ben H. Rome.
